The narrative of Gu Jue Zhuan centers around Shang Gu, initially one of the top four immortals, who falls into a profound slumber after giving up herself in a 60,000-year-long trial. Upon awakening after multiple years, her memory of events from 300 years prior is entirely erased. Nonetheless, her past lover Bai Jue keeps her memory alive. He forfeits his reincarnation for her existence and patiently waits for her for 60,000 years. Even after his spirit fades, Shang Gu resolves to wait for him eternally. First announced in 2014 after being delayed in production, Gu Jue Zhuan, originally known as Shang Gu, is based on the xianxia novel of the same name written by Xing Ling (星零), first published in 2012.
