Anna Elizabeth Heegaard, a woman of color with considerable wealth and enslaved individuals, starts a romantic involvement with Peter von Scholten, the governor-general of the Danish colony. In between communal banquets, they deliberate on societal changes while a young enslaved individual fans them with a feather from an elevated position. Meanwhile, hidden talks about a possible uprising among the slaves are starting.
