In love with his cousin Angela, Ferdinando Cefalù is determined to wed her. Unfortunately, he is already married to Rosalia, and divorce is prohibited in Italy. To overcome this, he plans to entice Rosalia into infidelity, intending to murder her and escape with a mild punishment as the law is lenient towards men who kill cheating wives. He enlists the help of a painter to seduce Rosalia, only to discover that she's more devoted than he assumed.
