Acclaimed film director John L. Sullivan strongly believes that he needs to experience hardship before he can shoot his challenging magnum opus. Thus, he disguises himself as a vagabond and embarks on a journey to understand adversity personally. However, he only experiences a train ride back to Hollywood and companionship with a beautiful blonde. Undeterred, he intensifies his efforts but finds himself in deeper trouble than anticipated when he loses his memory and is held captive in a chain gang.
