Prior to the popularity of Michael Mak's Sex And Zen in the '90s, Ho Fan's Yu Pui Tsuen (The Carnal Prayer Mat, 1987) was a notable movie. However, lacking the allure of star Amy Yip, raunchy humor or lesbian romances, Yu Pui Tsuen had to make do with the sensuality and nudity provided by its relatively unfamiliar cast to make it a success. The film revolves around a young man who seeks the insight of a Buddhist monk following a dream of drowning due to excessive physical intimacy. Despite being advised by the monk of the dangers of overindulgence in carnal pleasures, the young man disregards this advice, consantly making love to his virgin wife. However, as a result of numerous passionate flings, he begins to comprehend the monk's wisdom.
