Born Uma Karuna Thurman, she is an American Hollywood actress and former model, born on April 29, 1970 in Boston. Her father is a professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist studies and a writer, who lived as an ordained Buddhist monk for three years. Her mother is a former model, born to a German nobleman and a Swedish model.

Thurman was raised Buddhist and spent approximately two years in Almora. She grew up mostly in Amherst, Massachusetts, where she attended Amherst Regional Junior High School. Uma Thurman has three brothers and a half-sister from her fathers previous marriage.

She met English actor Gary Oldman during the filming of State of Grace; whom she married in 1990 and divorced two years later. In 1998, she married American actor Ethan Hawke, with whom she has two children, daughter Maya and son Levon. The couple separated in 2003, with the divorce finalized in August 2005.
Two years later, she started dating Arpad Busson, and in June 2008 they announced their engagement, which they called off by the end of 2009. However, the couple reconciled soon after. They called off their engagement again in April 2014. They have a daughter together named Luna.

Uma Thurman began her modeling career at the age of 15, when she signed with Click Models. Her early successes included Glamour and the cover of British Vogue. She transitioned to acting with her film debut, the teen thriller Kiss Daddy Goodnight (1987).
Uma Thurman portrayed a young woman with unusually large thumbs in the movie Even Cowgirls Get the Blues (1993). The movie was a big flop and eventually earned her a Golden Raspberry nomination for Worst Actress.

In the black comedy Pulp Fiction (1994), she played Mia Wallace, the wife of a mobster. Several actresses were considered for the role, but director Tarantino immediately wanted Uma after their first meeting. This film was highly acclaimed. The character of Mia is considered one of the most iconic female film characters of the 20th century. For her performance, Thurman was nominated for a Golden Globe and an  for Best Supporting Actress. She did not take advantage of her newfound fame and decided not to film any big-budget movies for the next three years.

She reunited with Quentin Tarantino for the two-part action film (2003-2004), in which she played an assassin seeking revenge on her former lover. Tarantino wrote the role specifically for her, calling her his muse. The start of filming was postponed for several months when Uma became pregnant and Tarantino refused to recast the role. The actual filming lasted nine months and took place in five different countries. The role was also her most challenging, as she spent several months training in martial arts, fencing, and learning Japanese. Kill Bill was originally intended to be released as one film, but due to its long runtime, it was eventually split into two parts.
Uma Thurman has of course appeared in many films. In recent years, she has appeared in the family comedy The War with Grandpa (2019) and the thriller series Suspicion.
